I've run into a real problem here... not sure how to solve it.

I have Oracle 10G installed and up to today, running fine on SUSE9.3.  I
had to do a system restart this morning... when it all came back up I
did an su to root, cd /etc/init.d and then ./oracle start  - I manually
start Oracle because I don't always need it up and running...

Anyway, the startup failed with ORA-01031 (See ORA-01031.ora-code.com) Insufficient Privileges.

I did some digging and most suggestions were to make sure the oracle
user was a member of dba.  It is - nothing was changed.

If I su to oracle (user I installed Oracle under), start sqlplus /nolog,
and try to do a connect / as sysdba I also get ORA-01031 (See ORA-01031.ora-code.com) and/or the
computer locks up.  Only way out is to reboot.

Restart the computer ... I fire up dbca just to see what happens
there... I select edit database, and click on the SID (only one db
defined) and the computer locks up.

In fact... any time I touch Oracle at all it locks the computer up.  The
only situation where it doesn't lockup the computer is if I attempt an
oracle start as root... but as I said earlier, this just gives me ORA-01031 (See ORA-01031.ora-code.com).

This has been a fully functioning Oracle install up until this morning.
 I have had several restarts (last one was 14 days ago) and Oracle has
always come back when I started it.

I have installed the new cairo this morning, and updated gtk2, but...
why would they have any effect on Oracle?

So... anyone have any ideas what may have happened?  What can I do to
revive my Oracle?
